Our story

Where it began
The name tells the story. Don is short for donburi, the humble Japanese rice bowl that has fed busy workers for generations. Ta-Ke nods to bamboo — take in Japanese — a plant celebrated for its resilience, its straight and honest growth, and its quiet strength.
We began as a small counter serving Japanese-inspired rice bowls to Melbourne's city workers: generous, honest food for people with somewhere to be. What we learned at that counter — the value of speed without shortcuts, and friendliness without fuss — now shapes everything we do.
